You could say that he sacrificed an ugly suit. It's as if you went out and bought a suit and wore it, and everyone made fun of you because it was such an ugly suit. So you had a really miserable time (partly because you wore an ugly suit, partly because your friends are assholes!) and when you got home you dumped the suit in the trash and were done with it.
For he so loved the world, that he wore a cheap suit. I like the ring of that.
