So that would mean I somehow chose for the notion of a god who punishes his creation for his own mistakes to not make sense to me...or for that matter, to be fooled by the complete lack of evidence for the existence of him or indeed anything supernatural.

Or, God designed my brain knowing fully well what conclusions it would reach...therefore, if Christianity is true, then God wants me to go to hell.
