When people willing to be with God die with sins that haven't been made up, they go to Purgatory. Heaven is pure and people who die with sins can't get in yet.
There, they experience a period of suffering for the wrong they have done and then go into heaven.
I believe Heaven and Hell are far too extreme states for complex people.
So God's mercy and justice come into balance through Purgatory.
So where does purgatory get a mention in the bible?

If you're not supposed to ride faster than your guardian angel can fly then mine had better get a bloody SR-71.
