I am a hardcore rock collecter and gemcutter.
I just went collecting flourite from a mine dump last week and was collecting nice quartz crystals this weekend. I am going to Mt. Antero in Colorado in a couple of weeks to collect aquamarine!
Got any pics of good stuff you've found?
Sweet! I've never gone on an organized rock collecting trip. Though I would love to do so if the opportunity came up.
I first began collecting around 7 years old. My dad was digging a hole in one of his pastures with a backhoe. I saw this unusual rock in the dirt pile he was making and grabbed it. It turned out to be a crystal clear piece of quartz. Good size too.
The problem was that there is no natural forming quartz in that part of Texas. Every documented piece of quartz located anywhere near where I grew up was dug up by archeologists excavating old Choctaw indian burial mounds.
From then on I was hooked. I've collected rocks from all over the world. And even out of this world.
Unfortunately where I live now is mostly just limestone. Good for finding old sea bed type fossils. But nothing much more interesting than that.
Always good to meet another Rock Hound.
