I've got a question for you Min., since you're the resident historian. Is the country becoming increasingly more divided politically in the last two decades, or has it always been this way?
I think the country has become more fascistic as a whole in the last 40 years and it manifests itself in such subtle ways as the extreme right which wants to shoot border crossers on sight while the center is content to spend billions for a fence. The left, such as it is, is shut out of the debate.
A large part of this is driven by the (correct) observation that the country is changing and angry old white guys find themselves facing a future in which they or their kids will be a minority. We are seeing attempts to cling to power.
Consider as an analogy this scene from 1960's Spartacus. Crassus represents the entrenched upper classes and Caesar represents the "mob" and Mitt Romney told us in no uncertain terms who they are.
