The concept of face saving is inherent in all asians raised in asian cultures, religious or not, and today, living in a western culture, i am unable to do anything that would cause me to "lose face", despite the fact that no one around me would even understand. Which defeats the purpose of saving face. But you see, it's just so unthinkable to "lose face", that I will not risk doing anything of that sort because you never know when an asian is watching you.
For people who were not raised this way, think of "face" as honour, only 1000x more serious, and 1000x more ridiculous.
