Under the Constitution all tax bills must originate in Congress, specifically the House, though the Senate has some wiggle room in this regard. Representatives are elected by the people. Yes, many taxes we pay today were enacted by previous congresses, but they were still legitimate. People wanted services. The services don't pay for themselves. Representatives passed taxation bills to pay for them. Taxes are mandatory because if you have the means and are benefiting from the services you should contribute, across the board. If taxes weren't mandatory people would gain the benefits of government services without paying, which would unduly burden those that opted to pay taxes. The poor can't pay, they don't have the means. There is a difference between an inability to pay and not wanting to pay.
So what is the problem? Taxes were enacted by those elected many years ago and not by you? Boo-hoo.
