You see dear Stimbo we are talking about consciousness not about physical skill that creatures may have in order to survive.
In the past homo erectus was physically strong that we are today and yet his consciousness was so much smaller so we got to understand was is needed today to overcome the life obstacles and what was needed yesterday.

How do you know? How would you even propose to measure this?
Have you even been near a sperm whale before you decided this?
Dear Esq., you got to understand what is the consciousness and her role in the life of every creature.
Animals are driven by instinct while humans although they have some instinct they also have free will.
With the free will you are able to do the right thing and reach human emancipation.
The sperm whale or any other animal have still to reach the stage in which the free will will take over.

To be proud of spiritual achievements is ok because that is something that will follow you for ever.
The problem is to be proud of material achievements because once your body go to the dogs also your achievements go to the dogs so i can not see any waste.
