Several herbs were known to have been used in Rome to induce abortion. There were record of pervailers of such herbs being crucified during the reign of Augustus when the Emperor thought the virtues of Roman aristocratic women were not what they could be, and yet the birth rate amongst Roman aristocracy was too low.
Punching a woman's lower abdemon during early pregnancy was also a common method. It was even said to have been used by certain Roman emperors on their wives.

Second, thanks! I like learning tidbits like this. Even, um, the odd abortion trivia.
Thirdly, funny how if only the women punched the guys(a bit lower and sooner), maybe abortion by assault would never have been needed. (I know this method works, too...)
