I am typing things in empty spaces, but am not sure where they are going, who can read them and how I should be doing it.

That's because of your post count. The more you post, the more stars you get and your title changes accordingly. you can also customize your title via the User Control Panel (CP), that's found in the upper right corner. Once you open it, you'll find a list to the left with stuff you can change or modify
