I don't have a million dollars. I do have a fairly decent minority fraction of it in retirement savings, though - and the best I can do without putting principal at risk, or tying up capital for more than a year is a lot closer to 1% than 5%.
To get those kind of returns, you have to go to bonds and equities, with all the risk those entails.
I'd be happy to be wrong about this. I'd be able to retire before I die.
