"What separates me from most so-called atheists is a feeling of utter humility toward the unattainable secrets of the harmony of the cosmos. (Albert Einstein to Joseph Lewis, Apr. 18, 1953)
Perhaps you missed this, but the letter Min linked to was written in 1954, a year after the quote you've given here. Not that it matters in your little jab at atheist supposedly being prideful, but there's simply no way we can say Einstein believed in god. Here, lemme show you:
Quote:When the answer is simple, God is speaking. (Albert Einstein)"
Yeah, he might have said that. But he also said this:
Einstein Wrote:It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it
So, we've got a pretty clear indication- just a year before he died, by the way- that whatever beliefs he did have, Einstein wasn't a religious man in the same way you're trying to say he was. We do get clarification of his beliefs in another quote:
Quote:I believe in Spinoza's God who reveals himself in the orderly harmony of what exists, not in a God who concerns himself with the fates and actions of human beings.
Of course, Spinoza's "god," such as it is, is broadly deistic, more of an enthusiasm for the natural world than any kind of religious claim. Here, see for yourself.
Pretty clear, I'd say. Not that I think this has any bearing on either the conversation at hand or the larger question of the existence of god; Einstein could have been the most devout of all Catholics and it wouldn't make one jot of difference to the truth of the religion. I just hate to see faulty assertions being made, and since it only took me a few minutes of research to clear up, well... I'll let the fans at home decide how to take that.
