I am not sure what illness you were diagnosed with. However, there is a great Psychiatrist who wrote a few books about cognitive behavorial therapy (CBT). His name is David D. Burns and one of his more popular books is Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy. One of his theories is that most people who suffer from Depression/Anxiety do not need medication and can cope alone using methodologies within CBT. He cites numerous studies that reinforce his position. This requires work/homework and is not an easy process. Recovery, as he calls it, does not come instantly and requires time.
I am not advocating that you leave your medication, since this is a delicate matter. But, for what it is worth, this is the path that I am following. I hope to be free of the medication I am on and my therapist recommended this book.
Dr. Burns does state that if you have schizophrenia, that you should not discontinue your medication. Schizophrenia is still not widely understood and too many unknowns.
Best of luck and follow that light.
