@festive1 - I wish I could say something more reassuring, but I have to agree with John V. I guess there is a first time for everything.
I have seen the same study, and after experiencing some very real hit-and-miss medicine, I can say I see no reason to doubt it. As the joke goes, they don't call it "practicing medicine" for no reason.
What can you do, though? Really, all you can do is ask questions, take responsibility for educating yourself about any medications and diagnoses, and if something you encounter is questionable, question it. You have to be your own best advocate. Do not trust them blindly.
