I'm not in a physical condition to run. But there's something almost magical (did I just say that? oops) about the simplicity and beauty of running. Several years ago, I attended a D3 NCAA postseason XC meet (it was both men's and women's). I love the color of a bunch of XCers just starting their run, and just the rhythm. When watching the olympics, one of my favorite events is the marathon, and I like the longer track events, too.
It's also a lifelong sport. The XC coach at Antelope Valley College up in L.A. County was in the news for ending a streak of running at least a mile (sometimes much more) every day since some time in 1968 (IIRC) when he was varsity XC at what is now Cal State-Fullerton.
Doing something simple and good for you for the love of it (but having a related paying job as well).
