Hmmm... did religion invent marriage? Or did the idea come from somewhere else? As far as I know, the idea predates written history, so religion inventing marriage is entirely possible. In fact, it makes sense. The earliest role of religion was as a way to impose social obligations and marriage is a way to do that.
