afterlife makes sense from this angle, the universe is heading for a 'heat death' since it's expanding and getting cooler to the point where information can't be transmitted for lack of concentrated heat (energy) which would mean anything that happened in the trillion years would be lost forever. so, no afterlife, nothing ultimately matters.

That doesn't mean it makes sense, it just means that you're more comforted by the prospect given the realities of the universe. To which I say: tough luck. You might not like the way things are, but that doesn't make any moves toward proving your afterlife theory, and "what makes sense," isn't in any way a measure of what's true to begin with, because you don't know everything, and could be suffering from an emotional reaction to a complex issue... among other things.

Besides, things can still matter; I've never understood this fear that christians have of selecting meaning on their own, and not being told what's meaningful by a dusty old book.
