I get your point but mostly it's an attempt to recapture positive health more than stave off death. If you have some kind of infection, the risk of dying is generally vanishingly low but the medication helps your own immune system do what it would do anyway and make you feel better. Similarly with my depression/anxiety meds. I'm not going to die as a direct consequence of not taking them, necessarily.
