You should pay more attention in high school. It is silly that you state that the US joined the war because Germany declared war on us. That is the stupidest history statement that I've heard so far on these boards.
The US people were reluctant to join the European war, but the US government was eager to help our allies with everything but entry into the war. Our containment actions in the pacific enraged Germany's ally, Japan. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. The US declared War on Japan. Germany declared war on us for declaring war on their ally. We declared war on Germany.
Our entry into the war was as a direct result of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
