I really think there was a historical Jesus just based on the number of writings about him in the first century. But street preachers claiming to heal the sick and raise the dead were a dime a dozen in 1st century Israel. He wouldn't have been anything special at all.
Jesus' hook was that he didn't charge for his services. Of course what he found was that people were still falling all over themselves to give he and his group whatever they needed. They wanted for nothing.
