Well my wife is a spiritualist, we were taking and she happened to mention the Fox sisters as if they were "real" spiritualists. It just so happened that I had read that they were self confessed fakes.(although later recanted, as though you can do that).

I could almost see the gears move as my wife tried to fit her beliefs into the evidence.
This is what she came up with.
"The Fox sisters were real spiritualists but in their desire to spread the faith they augmented their real abilities to try and convince others of the truth."
Her view of reality restored she went on with her day.
For a second there though I rocked her world.
