If it was in a Muslim country and they were out bragging about it, or attempting to spread lies than it's ok. Otherwise if they want to be atheists and live in a Muslim country they can do so if they keep belief or disbelief to themselves
I never doubted they left. A lot of Iranians did who drank, went to nightclubs, amongst other things. They wanted to live these lifestyles and really Iran is not for them if that's what they want
