I think the fact that he's dodged the question this long means that he just doesn't want to answer in the affirmative, which he'd have to do to maintain his position.

If we press him long enough, I'm sure that's what he'll do, safe in the knowledge that his curiously silent god won't (or can't, on account of not existing) ask him to do such a thing. And the wheel of dishonesty will turn...
