How can someone get so messed up in the head?

The thought of returning to the nothingness they came from lowers their serotonin, increases their heart rate and creates the onset of a panic attack. The serotonin crash is increased by further thoughts given to the meaningless nature of death, leading them to depression, migraines, lack of dopamine driven motivation and dysphoria. The feeble minds need to be told a good story to maintain their brain chemicals balanced.

Atheists have ascended to a further stage in enlightenment because they do not require a comforting story to maintain their brain chemistry balance.
