Yes. Why should you take pride in something you had nothing to with, when the outcome is so random? I myself belong to a very specific lingual minority, and I was force fed throughout elementary and junior high that belonging to this particular minority is something I should be proud of. Why? Just because, I was given no further explanation. I see ethnic pride to get in the way of getting rid of racism and segregation, because if you feel the need to be proud of yourself due to heritage, that you have to honor it no matter what, makes you so focused on that you are different and it feeds the "them vs. us" mentality. If you want to be proud of something, be so because of what you've managed and achieved, not because of tradition and heritage.
When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
