Funny one this. I'm always curious about the reasons for ridicule. What is the subtext?
"you're so much dumber than me actually funny"?
"look at how much cleverer I am than this person"
"please, realise how wrong you are and adjust your view"
However I conceive of it it's hard to too believe that it represents a degree of insecurity on the part of the ridicule, a desire for onlookers to agree, perhaps, for fear of the same activity?
I'm aware I'm guilty of this as often as the next man, but it's not a good tactic in a debate. It reduces the chance that your opposite will change their view to match yours and often just leads to a flame war. I can think of a few times that this has happened with ditch and GC, a potentially interesting debate degenerates into "you're dumb," "No YOU'RE dumb".
Except Americans. It's OK to ridicule them. And will be until you stop calling it "football" and call it a more accurate name. "hand ovoid" or something .

Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken."
