I have had experience with children, and my nieces don't really get spanked. They get sent to their room or something. sending them to a corner might be a good idea, but then they'd still be crying. I'm not keen on the old "stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about" line.
It really depends on what's effective with the kid. I've had nightmares from my dad threatening to beat me, but I have hit my nieces from time to time. Usually I'm just supposed to send them to their parents, though they can be uncooperative and I'm not supposed to drag them.
Seriously, if I ever got enough money and wanted to raise a kid, I'd adopt someone that's already been taught right. little kids are only fun when you can leave them if they get annoying.
