I do think a huge premise of the show is making want to route for dexter. You're morally torn in turn, know what he's doing is wrong. The show presents to you the other side of the coin, and I think you end up really finding yourself each episode concerned for Dexter. Rita was just a social beard for him. Her ultimate point from episode one was to get killed by one of Dexter's foes.
