On the logic of nationalism

I decided to create this thread after seeing a post in Egoraptor's thread on how people were actually ignorant of what nationalism is.

Before going into nationalism, I think its best to define the concept of a nation.
A nation is basically a collection of people who have a common language, common history, common culture and in many cases, common blood and ancestry.
A nation is built on the consciousness of the aforementioned parameters, and it brings people with similar traits together in action and thought.
Nations have existed throughout the centuries, but ideologies have only been recently established as a basis for political entities that are built on the national identity.

Nationalism is the broad name for a wide range of ideologies based on many different national identities. As its name implies, its often specific to the nation it is born into, and its main goals are the protection and propagation of the national identity, and the advancement of its goals.
