I can't give you a citation, but I can confirm that I've read that both affluence and education correlate with lower birth rate. Whether that lower birth rate is on account of the reason given, that I do not know; I rather doubt it.

So "intelligent" people are indeed having children, but the stats you've seen simply show a lower rate of birth. Correlation is noted, but not necessarily the causation. I guess to further this train of thought, I've always been of the mind that people of higher education DO have children, but the parenthood is planned a little better, which often means fewer children.
(I guess I was just a little perturbed at hearing that "intelligent" people do NOT have children.)
