I don't know about crazy hairstyles, but I usually get a buzz cut in the summer, and grow it out a bit in winter. Last time I had it cut, I told the barber to just cut and shave around the sides, but let the top keep growing. So now it's pretty thick up top, without being all around my ears or in my eyes or trailing down my neck.
