I'm kinda skewed on this discussion since medication is not optional for me. If I want a clear head, a solid reality, and no voices booming from every direction in my head I have to take my anti-psychotic. And if I want to have a decently-rounded, responsive mood that does not flatline too much nor turn to depression then I need my zoloft.
But doctors are starting to, at least from what I have seen in my state, abandon immediately putting kids on meds when it comes to things like ADHD. One of my nephews may have the disorder and his primary care as well as the psychologist currently testing him have no desire to put him on meds. I think it's slowly getting to the point where they let kids decide for themselves when they reach a certain age.
