Firstly cats need meat and there is no way that they can live without it (unlike humans) hunting is instinctive to them so killing a gazelle is something they will do when hungry (my dogs also will kill a sheep or cow if left to their own devices and I stop this) the cat will practise catching a mouse and letting it go. It has no conception that the mouse is a feeling creature like itself to the cat it is just a food source/source of amusement.
We neither need to eat meat and we are capable of empathy. We have pretty much evolved to think killing each other is bad (well those who are morally more developed do) which is a new thing in the world when up to VERY VERY recently we though slavery and killing each other at will was quite acceptable. Indeed some humans were killing and eating each other last century,
Some may call them junk, I call them treasures.
