There's a song called 1 is the loneliest number. I believe Alice is referencing that.
Unfortunately Minecraft doesn't actually give you a tutorial. You'll need someone to help you get started.
I don't know if anyone has given advice yet, but start by collecting wood, then press E to go into inventory. There's a 2x2 grid where you can craft things. Turn some raw wood into planks, and four planks makes a crafting table. Use the bigger grid that the crafting table gives you to make a pickaxe. Convert some planks into sticks for a handle, and a row of planks on top to make the pick.
Dig down with your hands into the ground until you hit stone. Mine the stone until you have at least seventeen blocks. You can make a pick, an axe, a shovel, and a sword using sticks for handles, and stone in the shape you'd expect those tools to be. The rest of the stone will be for a furnace, which you make by flilling the crafting table grid up except for the middle. This will be where you cook your meat, smelt ores, and possibly make charcoal by cooking raw wood.
Once you have your tools, you'll need meat for food, and wool for a bed. Just put three wool over three planks in the crafting grid. That should get you on the way to Minecraft fun and survival.
Of course this would be for survival mode. Not creative mode. Still, I felt like a little tutorial would be useful for newbies here. What do you veterans think of my tutorial.
