They weren't changed, they were removed (or they never existed to begin with).
Secondly, your story says that "the event is remembered there yet with fear and dread". If it's remembered there, it must be told there, and so it must have been passed to some people, with the name of the town going with it. What is the point in removing the name of the town anyway?
So in short, yes, your story *might* be true, but without any names or references, we have no way to back it up. I mean, what if I told you a story that in an English village, two men were harassing the local muslims, saying Allah didn't exist, etc. The muslims told them that Allah would burn them in a lake of fire, and the men laughed out loud. The men went to the pub, and order "two lake of fires" please! They drink, toasting their mockery, and are struck down dead.
So, given this story, would you convert to Islam? No, of course you wouldn't, and we wouldn't convert to Christianity because of your story for the exact same reason.
