Perhaps I've always taken the "powerless" part to go hand in hand with the "higher power" part, and that is what is not true. That we are powerless over our lives and addictions and a higher power is necessary to rescue a person.Well the part of that approach I don't like is that it's a "one-fit-all" mentality, whereas some people may be perfectly able to control their drinking, and others may have a true addiction and thus it may not be the right approach for everyone.
But my advice to the op is to suck it up, go to some meetings it's not going to hurt. After you've been to a few meetings, suck it up and also see a psychologist if possible on the issue - get your GP to refer you to one. Getting professional advice in my opinion is necessary, the worst that can happen in both instances is that it doesn't help you - so you've got nothing to lose. My friend told me that seeing his psychologist was one of the best things he ever did - and he went to a 12 step program for years, so as I said, suck it up and try it.

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke
