I don't know everyone on the planet. So I can't know what their preferences are. That's where my comment about mind reading comes in. So, in lieu of mind reading, I can treat people how I would like to be treated until I get to know them.
The 'platinum rule' is just an extension of the golden rule. If I know someone and they know me, I will treat them how I now know they would like to be treated because that is how I want to be treated.
