The problem is purely intellectual. Assuming supernatural influence, purpose can be understood. God can be understood.
Assume first, ask questions later. Well, in this case, no questions were asked; blind following instead ensued. This is the complete antithesis of intellectual.
So you think there's supernatural influence, but you have no evidence for such. Why assume at all?
