The problem is purely intellectual. Assuming supernatural influence, purpose can be understood. God can be understood.
Understanding is knowledge is what faith is built on.
With no ability to actually know that your assumption is true, or is even based upon truth, what makes you think you can gain any kind of knowledge from your belief?
Assuming supernatural influence with no ability to test that assumption merely means that purpose, and God, can not be understood but merely assumed in the same manner, and with the same lack of concern over whether or not there's actually anything there.
