Religion has always been a way for people to feel special. Christians don't want to believe in evolution because they don't want to feel as though they once walked close to the ground like "wild animals". They used to think they were the center of the galaxy - why? - because God thought they were special and he put them there.
Even the concept of Hell is a product of arrogance. The idea that "if you aren't like me, then you will surely suffer" totally lacks humility.
Throughout the Bible, God destroys entire civilizations because they wronged the Christian people.
