Might be an interesting experiment to have an actual state religion in the US.
Put all possible religions on strips of paper, put them in a hat and pull one out at random.
There is your state religion. The government would tolerate other faiths, but members of the 'One True Faith' would enjoy a variety of perks. Kids would have to opt out of religious education class at school of their parents did not want to attend, but it would be noted, of course. Public statuary acknowledging the 'One True Faith' (assuming the were OK with graven images) would be bought with tax dollars and with the power of eminent domain, placed in high value/visibility locations, etc, etc.
I'm assuming with the potential tens of thousands of religions, picking one at random would result in something like Jim-Bobs Temple of Heavenly Cleavage being deemed the national faith, and a few days later, all the enabling legislation that put the country there would be repealed.
Jim-Bob however, would remain a demi-deity the rest of his life.
hock:
BTW, I remain amazed, with the constitution the way it is now, a couple legally marrying in a faith that forbids divorce/remarriage can actually get a divorce in all 50 states.
It would seem to me the governments hands would be tied in such cases, and the couple would have to tough out their mistake.
Or declare themselves atheists . . . . .
