Democracy cannot exist in a world in which the religion of the land dictates everything from culture to society and even to laws (Sharia).

It should be pointed out that a tribal socioculture emphasizing patriarchy, the subjugation of women, and the settling of disagreements with the blood feud long predated the invention of Islam. Indeed, I wouldn't doubt if the former directly influenced the shaping of Sharia'a, and Islamic doctrine in general.
