On the whole, and yes this is a generalisation, it tends to be much easier for a person outside the religious bubble to assume the persona of a zealot, than for the zealot to act as a non-believer, merely because of the freedom on thought and behaviour; combined with the training camp of sheer overwhelming fundy examples gracing the net. Much like a certain classic (ie proper) Star Trek episode, in which it was easier for a civilised man to pose as a brutish despot than for the brute to act civilised.
