When our visitors ask about the snakes (we have at least 8 species, four of which are venomous), I tell them, "Don't worry, I've got a theory: anyone who gets snakebit probably deserved it." Like any other animal, they just want to be left alone.
The cottonmouth up there that looks like a close-up was from about seven feet away. The closest I've been to a venomous snake is when I almost stepped on this juvenile cottonmouth -- he was coiled up and though I'd seen him, I thought he was a racoon turd. I got my camera in close:
