(July 4, 2014 at 8:21 pm)Revelation777 Wrote: God obviously has made some concessions based on man's sinfulness. For example, God hates divorce and this was never a part of his original plan. Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning." Matt 19:8.
I always laugh, when people talk about the concessions god had to make. It's pretty hard to square the god who'll turn a woman to salt for disobeying him in the tiniest of ways, annihilate entire cities because they weren't obeying him, and destroy nearly all life on the planet because one species wasn't doing what he said, with this hand wringing, conciliatory god who, apparently, can't do shit without working within human reality. He's god, Rev! He can get things done without first checking with his goddamn supervisor!
It's almost as if all those high flying old testament stories were meant to be told in past tense where nobody could check on the truth of them, and the new testament authors suddenly found themselves having to cover for the fact that they couldn't produce that god by retconning in this weaker version...

Quote:Secondly just because you say something is bull poopie doesn't mean it should be dismissed.
You're right: the paragraphs after I called it bullshit are why it should be dismissed. Did you forget about those, or is it just easier to pretend all I did was call your argument a name?
Quote: We have a very narrow view of human history and slavery was a way of life for centuries. In fact in some ways if you work for an employer you too are under the authority and control of another person.
Again, I don't have to look to history to determine that the bible's stance on slavery is immoral; I just need to look at the instructions laid out for that in the book. No additional historical context needed.
And could you not insult my intelligence by comparing slavery to proper employment? I can leave my job at any time, I get paid, and at no point can my employer trick me into staying forever. Oh, and he can't beat me. And my children don't belong to him. Oh, he can't give me a woman like chattel...
Wow, it's almost like there's numerous differences between employment and the biblical description of slavery!

Quote:Thirdly, homosexuality is not part of God's original design, neither is animal eating animal.
So when you said that it wasn't natural, you meant for us to ignore what we observe in nature when we consider that point? So, there's lots of actually natural things that aren't natural either.

So what you're actually saying is that, except for that it is natural by definition, it's not natural? Sorry Rev, but the rest of us aren't going to accept your cartoon universe where Jesus should be riding dinosaurs and carnivores don't eat meat, until you can demonstrate that this is true. Until then, words mean what they mean, and not what you want them to mean.

Quote: What God says is perverse is perverse regardless of what we think. Sorry, but He made the rules not us. If we can create our own universe then you can create your own rules.
That's not much of an argument. Why should I care what you think about who gets to make the rules? God doesn't seem to mind so much, really: you're the only one sitting here burbling about what he's in control of. I'm pretty sure he can speak for himself, if he's got a problem. In fact, I invite him to come down and let us know why he gets to make the rules for everyone, like some kind of dictator: let him make an argument for why this is so, instead of just having peons assert it by fiat. Because arguments from authority mean jack shit to me, especially when it's borrowed authority.
Any time, god. Any time.
