That is a better rule, there. When it makes a hard e sound. Many fewer exceptions. Species, seize, caffeine, protein, codeine are a few. But that long e thing is helpful.
Proposed Change: "I before E except after C and when the IE/EI sound is a Long E."

Ok let me make sure I have it straight for all the ESL students.
I before E except after C and usually only when the IE/EI sound is a Long E, except for species, seize, seizure, caffeine, protein, codeine, etc
That should be simple enough for everyone who wants to learn....hehe
