I believe the words or other similar words mean to obey "the commands in the Quran", not about obeying the Messenger. It is about "a Book", provable evidence. This because the Quran is a revelation and no one can prove that it is from Allah. . . and no one sees that it is from Allah. Therefore, the Quran is Muhammad's saying (that's why there is the second Shahada, Muhammad as the Messenger of Allah). . the Quran is a hadith, an "introductory page" and there is other Quran, ie. the actual Quran (56:77-79), (81.19-21) . . . Secondly, the Quran told that Muhammad also makes many mistakes and for this this reason. . . it is inconsistent to conclude that those verses is about obeying Muhammad. For example. . .
And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they become believers? And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah , and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason (ie. Muhammad). (10.99-100)
So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller. (88.22-23)
And if Muhammad had made up about Us some [false] sayings, We would have seized him by the right hand; Then We would have cut from him the aorta. And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him. (69:44-47)
Muhammad or whoever he was, is just a man. .just like you and me, and there is no point for anyone to follow him if it is not from the Quran. What matter, is the Book, "provable evidence".
