Because American media likes to focus on the worst people to gain viewership. It's the local fluff pieces that would tend to focus on the well-behaved atheists and those segments have very little interest.
So basically, as a group, often you're perceived only as good as your worst member.
In my years in America, I never met any of those Christians who protested against gay marriage, etc. (the most intense were the ones at Obama's inauguration with the quotes from the Bible), but I would be lead to believe that American Christians are all about taking peoples' rights away by the few that I see all the time on the news. Frankly, I would never have heard about Young Earth Creationism had it not been for all the atheists who whine about it like it actually affected their lives.
