Even into the 19th Century, the prejudice against Jews prevented them from having decent jobs (e.g in Prussia, Jews weren't allowed to be lawyers, or have any kind of government job).
Hitler borrowed heavily from Martin Luther, that good German founder of protestantism, when forming his views of Jews. And whether he was an atheist or not (which is debatable) the people who actually did the exterminating were mostly Lutherans and Catholics.
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
