Bangers for sausages because as any good chef knows you're not supposed to prick them or else the fat (and hence the flavour) leaks out so they had a tendency on occasion to explode in the frying pan, hence 'bangers'.
Mash, or creamed potatoes is just what it says. Put them together and you have a traditional low-cost (therefore considered to be working-class) meal of bangers and mash.

I remember my mom saying something like that (she's born and raised in Kent near Tonbridge Wells), but we were moving around so much in my childhood that I never got to try it. Anything with sausage has to be good, right?
